The original track (heard in its most pure form at the end of the song) was penned by Brandon in 2008. It was a struggle to get the song off the ground to be something presentable and representative as The Alpine Ghost, but a few breakthroughs on a hungover spring morning in 2011 yielded the downtempo-inspired ambient intro, with drums inspired heavily from Modeselektor's "Let Your Love Grow." Among that intro was the now recognizable pentatonic motif heard throughout the song.
